GROWERS | MICHAEL ETZEL AND CAREY CRITCHLOW
RIBBON RIDGE AVA
DRY FARMED, BIODYNAMIC
Few names in Oregon wine carry the weight of Michael Etzel. In 1986, he transformed an 88-acre pig farm in Ribbon Ridge into the now-legendary Beaux Frères, redefining Oregon Pinot Noir in the process. In 2010, he established Sequitur Vineyard with his partner Carey Critchlow, a 12-acre jewel bordering Beaux Frères' Upper Terrace. Planted to 17 diverse clones of Pinot Noir, the site is enclosed by a dense forest of Douglas Fir, offering natural protection that preserves its distinct microclimate. The vineyard's marine sedimentary soils have never been conventionally farmed, instead nurtured with organic and biodynamic practices to sustain its native biodiversity.
Working with Sequitur is, above all, an opportunity to work with Mike—one of Oregon’s most influential vignerons. His meticulous farming and deep understanding of Pinot Noir result in fruit of extraordinary depth and balance. Each harvest, he hand-selects a mix of clones—including Wadenswil, Musigny, DDO, D47, 777, 114, and Chalone—for Walter Scott, filling five picking bins for a micro-production, single-vineyard expression. This wine is a reflection of the land and a testament to Mike’s relentless pursuit of excellence.
