MT PISGAH, POLK COUNTY, WILLAMETTE VALLEY
DRY FARMED, ORGANIC
Established in 1981 by Dan and Helen Dusschee, Freedom Hill Vineyard has built a reputation as one of Oregon’s most respected sites. Known for its powerful and expressive wines, the vineyard has long been recognized for its meticulous farming and commitment to quality. In recent years, their son Dustin has taken the helm, modernizing vineyard practices and transitioning Freedom Hill to organic farming, ensuring its continued evolution. The site spans the southeast slopes of an ancient uplifted seabed, rooted in well-draining Bellpine loam soils. Walter Scott sources fruit from two blocks of Pinot Noir and three blocks of Chardonnay, with vine ages ranging from 10 to 30 years, planted to Dijon 76 and 95 clones.
Protected from the Van Duzer winds, Freedom Hill enjoys a slightly warmer microclimate than the neighboring Eola-Amity Hills, fostering even ripening and exceptional concentration. The vineyard’s Pinot Noir is known for its structure and depth, while the Chardonnay is taut and precise, making Freedom Hill a cornerstone of Walter Scott’s winemaking. Here, among the towering Chardonnay vines, Ken and Erica’s daughter, Lucy, first fell in love with the vineyard. Running beneath the old, high-hanging trellis, sampling fruit, and declaring her love for the "white grapes," she unknowingly inspired the creation of Lucille—a special Chardonnay that honors both the vineyard and the next generation drawn to its magic.
