GROWER | JANIS PATE
CHEHALEM MOUNTAINS AVA
DRY FARMED, BIODYNAMIC
In 2012, while pouring at a wine tasting, the intrepid Janis Pate introduced herself to Ken and Erica and friendship immediately began to blossom. Over the next few years they watched as Janis took her plot of unmanaged pasture and began her journey cultivating Arlyn Vineyard. Arlyn is a lovely, biodynamically farmed site which flanks Dopp Creek, providing a wildlife crossing along the edge of the Ribbon Ridge on the south slope of the Chehalem Mountains AVA.
The 20 acre vineyard is planted with Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Gamay Noir on the classic Willakenzie sedimentary soils found in this section of the AVA. Janis farms organically and biodynamically, working with what mother nature provides. She uses gopher snakes, predatory birds, beneficial bugs, cover crop management and on-site compost to achieve a balanced quality of soil and vines - resulting in quality low yields while minimizing intervention. Janis Pate & Cooper (the vineyard dog) can be found most days of the year walking the vineyard rows, observing, connecting, adjusting and always, always learning.
